Information on the Latest Acne Treatments

Clear Light

There is a new treatment out for acne introduced his system uses no antibiotics, there are no side effects at all, and it is painless. This is the first medical tool that will clear up acne in four weeks of treatment. It is so far only available at some skin clinics on a limited basis but will be spread across the country soon. Clear Light has a lot of promise for the mild-to-moderate acne cases.

Blu-Light Treatment

This is a treatment made available that also is not medication dependant. It is called the BLU-U Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator Model 4170. The way this treatment works is you sit with your face close to the light at a set schedule, usually twice a week for about 25 minutes. The treatments can take five weeks or so.

This is used on mild to moderate acne and is not a painful procedure. A registered nurse or a skin specialist can administer it. After several weeks, the light can control your acne or clear it up for a long period of time. You will need a regular maintenance schedule. This treatment was approved in 2003 by the FDA for mild to moderate acne but is just gaining interest.

There are two other options that can be used with the BLU light technology for moderate to severe acne treatments. They are the Micro Blu-u peel, which is a mild skin peel and the light treatment, or for severe acne the Levulan Blu-u which is a little stronger peel that is applied an hour before the blue light treatment and will encourage the skin to peelaway the old layers to reach the deep acne pustules.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments are not the newest treatment but they are gaining in popularity especially for the severe cases. Laser treatment involves “zapping” the pimples with a laser beam to kill the bacteria that causes the acne. Other more traditional treatments are antibiotics for the most severe cases that can disfigure with scars.

Still being Researched

The University of Leeds in the UK has been trying some experiments with several different treatments that look promising, but also some have drawbacks as well. Different antibiotics, laser surgery, hormone therapy, Isotretinoin Studies, and the most recommended Benzoyl Peroxide for treatment and prevention of acne.

Antibiotics are used only for the most severe cases due to a specific type of bacteria that is associated with the severe acne cases. Lasers are recommended as a first line of remedies because this bacterium is getting resistant to antibiotics. Scientists are also looking into a viral therapy because a virus has been found on the skin that naturally attacks the bacteria in the skin that causes acne.

The other treatments like accutane and Isotretinoin work but can cause severe side effects like depression and neither can be used when the person is pregnant. Therefore, to prevent mild cases, the key is still prevention, proper diet and skin hygiene, which is a workable solution in all but the worst cases of acne. The antibiotics and other harsh medications are saved for the severe nodular and cystic acne where the benefits outweigh the side effects.
