Home-Made Acne Treatments
Acne is a common problem, especially during the teenage years, but it does not really count as an illness. That means two
things:
-
it means that you may not want to involve a doctor
-
it also means that you may feel you have to just grin and bear the unsightly acne outbreaks
You would be right about the first statement and wrong about the second. Unless you have extremely severe, life-limiting acne which is causing you depression and anxiety, there is an awful lot you can do to help yourself with acne. Home-made acne treatments can be used both to control active breakouts of pimples, cysts and lesions and it can also be used long-term to reduce the occurrence and severity of acne symptoms. When used for mild and moderate acne breakouts, home-made remedies are extremely effective in fighting acne.
The thing to remember about homemade acne treatments is that you need to be patient. Even strong, prescription medications can take a while to show you any noticeable effects so of course the milder home-made and therefore more likely to be natural, acne treatments may take a few weeks; they are worth persevering with though.
Tea tree oil as an application to your acne is very effective, as is drinking green tea. But on top of that, an effective home-made acne treatment regime centers around keeping your skin scrupulously clean. Wash with anti-bacterial soap three times a day as we all have bacteria which live on our skin – not a nice thought, I know, but it is better you know now. These bacteria can breed in our pores, causing inflammation and redness, which can then erupt into pimples and worse, which are typical of an acne outbreak. Use mild soap, nothing harsh, but contrary to what you may think, traditional soap is better than more modern facial washes for acne, as traditional soap has that drying effect which caused a whole industry of moisturizing facial washes to spring up, but which is great news for getting rid of the excess oil which is often a cause of acne.
A mild defoliant every couple of days will also help to slough off dead skin cells. This means they can’t hang around and block up the pores of your skin so they become more inflamed.
If thorough washing and sloughing off dead skin cells is not enough to control your acne, try benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, both of which are easily available. Apply initially every other day bit if excessive redness dopes not occur you can raise the application to daily. Salicylic acid is often found in facial cleansing pads so look out for that on the back of the pack.
If you want to go more natural with your home-made acne treatments you can. An infusion of thyme leaves in hot water – about one cup of dried thyme to one quart of water, is a strong and powerful solution. You then soak a face cloth in this solution when it is cooled a little but still quite warm. Then lie back and relax! The warm from the face cloth will open your pores and allow plugs of grease and oil to be freed, whilst the thyme soothes and slightly dries and smoothes the skin – while you spoil yourself with a rest for ten minutes
