Acne during Pregnancy

Pregnancy can have many different effects on your body. Your hormones are in a total upheaval. You cry when you should be laughing and vice versa. On top of all this you may find yourself with a bad case of acne. This is common in the first trimester and can sometimes even last the entire pregnancy.

When your hormones become unbalanced, certain things happen that can trigger an acne flare-up. You may have never had a blemish on your skin but the minute you got pregnant the battle began. The hormones in your body cause sebum, a natural lubricant, to be released. When the hormones are out of balance your body can release more sebum than normal. This can cause a build up in the pores of your skin. The result is a case of acne. The good news is this condition usually corrects it’s self after the first trimester of your pregnancy.

There are things you can do to help alleviate acne during pregnancy. The first thing is to get plenty of rest. This is beneficial to your body in many ways. However, a good night’s sleep can keep stress levels down. Stress can affect hormone activity as well, so keeping it under control is a good thing.

Plenty of water can help flush your system of any toxins which may have built up. Toxins in the body can always create more acne problems than normal. The toxins can build up in the skin pores and start creating sores and pustules which are unsightly. As you keep flushing your system with the water two things will happen: the toxins will be removed from your body and the skin cells can actually plump up creating a healthier look.

By keeping your face and neck clean and free of dirt and oil you can relieve some of the acne associated with pregnancies. The oils can clog the pores of your skin creating an acne flare up. Washing with a mild soap in the morning and in the evening will keep your skin fresh and clean. Scrubbing your face too much can actually create more problems. Skin is very tender and we sometimes forget there is only so much scrubbing it will take. Just keep a regular cleansing routine and you will see the benefits.

Because you are pregnant there are certain things you should not do. Any type of oral medication to alleviate the acne should be avoided. This means herbal remedies as well. Just because it is all natural does not mean it is safe for a woman in your condition. Herbs can be extremely effective in treating many things. They are known to help with many conditions. However, any herbal remedy can be potent. Do not use any product whether it is oral or topical until you discuss it with your doctor.

You do not have to live with the onslaught of an acne breakout just because you are pregnant. It does not last forever. When your hormones go back into balance, the acne problems will clear up on their own. If you follow the tips suggested here, it may alleviate some of the more severe cases of acne. Always remember your body is changing and there are going to be things happening which you may not fully enjoy or understand. In the end, it will be worth the slight problems you have during your pregnancy.
