Acne during Pregnancy

Pregnancy can have many different effects on your body. Your hormones are in a total upheaval. You cry when you should be laughing and vice versa. On top of all this you may find yourself with a bad case of acne. This is common in the first trimester and can sometimes even last the entire pregnancy.

When your hormones become unbalanced, certain things happen that can trigger an acne flare-up. You may have never had a blemish on your skin but the minute you got pregnant the battle began. The hormones in your body cause sebum, a natural lubricant, to be released. When the hormones are out of balance your body can release more sebum than normal. This can cause a build up in the pores of your skin. The result is a case of acne. The good news is this condition usually corrects it’s self after the first trimester of your pregnancy.

There are things you can do to help alleviate acne during pregnancy. The first thing is to get plenty of rest. This is beneficial to your body in many ways. However, a good night’s sleep can keep stress levels down. Stress can affect hormone activity as well, so keeping it under control is a good thing.

Plenty of water can help flush your system of any toxins which may have built up. Toxins in the body can always create more acne problems than normal. The toxins can build up in the skin pores and start creating sores and pustules which are unsightly. As you keep flushing your system with the water two things will happen: the toxins will be removed from your body and the skin cells can actually plump up creating a healthier look.

By keeping your face and neck clean and free of dirt and oil you can relieve some of the acne associated with pregnancies. The oils can clog the pores of your skin creating an acne flare up. Washing with a mild soap in the morning and in the evening will keep your skin fresh and clean. Scrubbing your face too much can actually create more problems. Skin is very tender and we sometimes forget there is only so much scrubbing it will take. Just keep a regular cleansing routine and you will see the benefits.

Because you are pregnant there are certain things you should not do. Any type of oral medication to alleviate the acne should be avoided. This means herbal remedies as well. Just because it is all natural does not mean it is safe for a woman in your condition. Herbs can be extremely effective in treating many things. They are known to help with many conditions. However, any herbal remedy can be potent. Do not use any product whether it is oral or topical until you discuss it with your doctor.

You do not have to live with the onslaught of an acne breakout just because you are pregnant. It does not last forever. When your hormones go back into balance, the acne problems will clear up on their own. If you follow the tips suggested here, it may alleviate some of the more severe cases of acne. Always remember your body is changing and there are going to be things happening which you may not fully enjoy or understand. In the end, it will be worth the slight problems you have during your pregnancy.

Yes, Babies Get Acne Too

February 10th, 2008 admin Baby Acne 0

You must be laughing to see the title of this article, but don’t laugh. Really, babies can get acne too. Acne isn’t confined to spotty hormonal teens. Little babies can get this distressing and unsightly condition too and as babies can’t do much to help themselves get rid of the acne, or to take care of their skin, you’ll just have to do it for them, won’t you?

Baby acne is actually a very common skin condition. It may actually even be present at birth. However, more often baby acne appears when the baby is a couple of weeks old, usually on the face and sometimes on the temples, chin and even on the baby’s back. It can be itchy and very red and the baby may scratch the spots. This leads to a possibility of the pustules becoming infected, so you will have to be very careful with this. Baby acne may persist up to two to five years.

Baby acne has several factors and symptoms. Early lesions are usually seen as whiteheads or blackheads (comedones) which are seen two to three years before the development of classical signs of acne. The comedones may be infected with some bacteria resulting in the formation of pus under the skin (pustules). Deeper lesions due to baby acne may lead to the formation of hard cysts and ultimately result in scarring, especially if they are scratched or picked.

It used to be that scientists placed the blame for baby acne upon the androgen and estrogen hormones that babies get from their mother through placental blood at the end of pregnancy; however, there is no real agreement upon this as a potential cause of baby acne. However, researchers keep on studying other factors. They have not decided that this is the main cause for baby acne.

Baby Acne treatment is usually in Clindamycin or Erythromycin cream form. The number of visible comedones (more commonly known as zits to you and I) is greatly reduced by the use of Azeleic acid cream or Benzyl peroxide cream. Local application of Retinoic acid reduces the number of non-inflamed lesions and neutralizes those nasty bacteria in the comedones.

Recently Isoretinoin, a synthetic form of Retinoic acid, is commonly used for baby acne, in a lower dose orally for a period of 4 months; it improves baby acne in 85-90 per cent of patients as well as older patients.

If your baby is unfortunate enough to develop baby acne and acne makes you think of grease and dirt, just remember one thing; please do not clean your baby more than the usual or apply any other cream without consulting your doctor. If you do, you may further irritate the delicate skin of your baby and it will further aggravate the baby acne.

How to Prevent Acne

To a large extent, acne is genetic and hormonal and it is very difficult to control them. However, there are things which will make you more likely to suffer from acne and so if you control those, you can go a long way towards acne prevention or at least lessening its severity.

Diet

A balanced diet rich in nutrients helps to prevent acne. Fresh vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds are the main things rich in all the goodies which help to prevent acne. You can incorporate those easily into your diet by having a side salad with your meal and having fruit as a dessert. Brazil nuts or pumpkin seeds as a snack between meals give you the selenium and zinc which are known to help prevent acne.

You should also reduce your intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates. This means that your body is producing less insulin to try to process these sugars. This in turn means your body is making less male hormone. These hormones are what will make your skin produce more oil so that your pores become clogged and acne develops. In the same way, reducing your caffeine intake will reduce the stress hormones your body produces.

Water

Drink plenty of water every day to help prevent acne. You should have at least two liters of water and still mineral water is the best type of water to drink. The water is helpful to keep you hydrated; this means your body is better able to shed dead skin cells instead of allowing them to hang around clogging up your pores so that oils build up in your pores causing acne breakouts.

Probiotics

These are the ‘friendly bacteria’ that we hear a lot about these days. Probiotics should live in the gut naturally; we all have them, but antibiotics and other things destroy our natural bacteria and so slow down the digestion of food. This means food hangs around in our guts too long instead of being flushed out (pun intended!) in our bowel movements. This is effectively poisoning us, so the body tries to find another way to excrete the toxins and pushes them out through the skin, making an acne breakout more likely.

Supplements

We don’t all get the balanced diet we need and even if we do, sometimes our bodies can’t absorb all the vitamins we need. That means that supplements may be a big help in the prevention of acne.

Natural Products

When it comes to cleansing, perfume or cosmetics, if you are prone to acne you should only use natural products on your skin. This does not guarantee that you won’t have an acne breakout but it does lessen the likelihood as the chemicals in regular products dry out the skin so your clever old skin makes more oil to compensate. That makes your acne worse, of course.

Reduce Stress

Controlling your stress allows you to keep your levels of the hormone cortisol low. Cortisol is a big culprit in acne, so the less of that you have coursing around your body the better.

Natural Acne Cures through Diet and Cleanliness

Natural Acne TreatmentNo matter how clean we think our environment is there is still some bacteria somewhere. You can find dirt in everything from the carpets to the ceiling tiles. Eliminating this makes us think for some reason that we have done the right thing. While it is true the cleanliness of our surroundings can affect our health, we sometimes overlook the one thing we should strive to keep clean every day. This is our body. Bacteria growing in our bodies can affect our skin causing horrible acne problems.

Let me paint for you a graphic picture of the inside of most of our bodies. The inside is filled with damp sluggish water, the kind you may find in a sewer under a city street. Sludge is oozing from the cracks of dehydrated cells. Slimy fat and oil are dripping from the walls of our arteries. Would you live in these conditions? The bacteria causing acne would gladly take up residence.
